What Widget Display Options Are Available?

TaskForge widgets offer extensive customization to match your workflow. Control how your tasks are organized, what information is displayed, and how widgets behave independently from the main app.

Grouped Task Display

Organize your widget tasks into groups for better clarity. Choose from multiple grouping options to match your workflow:

  • Priority: Group by high, medium, and low priority tasks
  • Status: Separate todo, in-progress, and completed tasks
  • Due Date: Group by overdue, today, upcoming, and no due date
  • Tags: Organize by project tags like #work, #personal, #urgent
  • File Location: Group by file name or folder path in your vault
  • Dates: Group by scheduled date, start date, or completion date

Each grouping option can have custom column ordering, so you can prioritize what matters most in your widget display.

Customizable Property Visibility

Control exactly which task properties appear in your widgets. Show only the information you need at a glance:

  • Due dates and times: See when tasks are due with optional time display
  • Tags: Display project and context tags for quick identification
  • Recurrence indicators: Show which tasks repeat automatically
  • Scheduled and start dates: Track when tasks should begin
  • File paths: See which Obsidian file contains each task
  • Completion and creation dates: Track task history and progress

Each custom list can have its own property visibility settings, or use global defaults. This means your "Today" widget can show different properties than your "Projects" widget.

Independent Widget Configuration

Configure how each custom list appears in widgets separately from how it appears in the app. This powerful feature lets you optimize your widget display without affecting your in-app experience:

  • Enable grouping in widgets while keeping a flat list in the app
  • Show fewer task properties in widgets to maximize visible tasks
  • Use different column orders for widget groups vs. app display
  • Create widget-optimized views that prioritize at-a-glance information

This flexibility ensures your widgets are perfectly tailored for quick glances while your app provides full detail when you need it.

What Are the Best Widget Tips and Practices?

Create Context-Specific Widgets

Set up multiple widgets for different contexts: one for "Today" tasks, another for "Work", and one for "Personal". Each shows exactly what you need to see.

Use Smart Filtering

Create custom lists with filters for high-priority tasks, due today, or specific tags. Your widgets will only show the most relevant tasks.

Optimize Placement

Place your most important widget on your main home screen for instant access. Use smaller widgets in less prominent locations for secondary lists.

Trust Auto-Refresh

Widgets refresh automatically in the background. You don't need to manually refresh - changes in the app or Obsidian appear within seconds.

How Do I Fix Common Widget Issues?

Widgets are reliable but occasionally need a quick fix. Here are the most common issues and how to resolve them.

Widget Not Updating

Open the app at least once to trigger a refresh. If the widget still does not update, remove it from your home screen and add it again. This forces the system to create a fresh widget connection.

Widget Showing the Wrong List

Long-press the widget on your home screen, then tap Edit Widget (or Configure on Android). Select the correct custom list from the dropdown. Each widget instance can display a different list, so make sure you are editing the right one.

Widget Blank After an App Update

After updating TaskForge, the widget may briefly appear blank. Restart your device to allow the system to reload widget extensions. If the blank state persists, remove the widget and re-add it from the widget gallery.

Battery Optimization Affecting Refresh

Widgets respect your system battery optimization settings. On iOS, background refresh frequency is managed by the operating system and increases the more you interact with the widget. On Android, make sure TaskForge is excluded from battery optimization in your system settings so background sync can run on schedule.

Android-Specific Troubleshooting

On some Android devices, aggressive battery management can prevent widgets from refreshing. Go to Settings, then Apps, find TaskForge, open Battery, and select Unrestricted. Also check that the TaskForge widget service is not being killed by any third-party task manager or cleaner app.
