Backup & Restore, redesigned
Shipped in version 3.0.0
TaskForge settings used to live only on the device you set them on. Now they save as editable files inside your workspace, the same way your tasks do, so opening that workspace on another device brings your settings with it. The Backup & Restore screen is rebuilt around that fact: it separates "these settings already travel with your workspace" from "I want a standalone copy I can carry anywhere."
Your settings live in your workspace
Open Settings, then Backup/Restore and the first thing you'll see is a
note that your settings save and sync automatically as you change them. They're
stored as files inside a taskforge folder at the root of your workspace,
alongside your tasks. Point two devices at the same workspace, through
whatever already syncs it (iCloud, a synced folder, or similar), and both
devices end up with the same settings without you doing anything.
A Reveal settings folder row opens that folder directly, on desktop in your file manager and on mobile by copying its path, so you can see the actual files if you're curious.
Backup & transfer
Below that is a separate Backup & transfer section, for moving settings somewhere your workspace sync doesn't reach, or for keeping a snapshot before you make a big change.
- Export a backup saves your current settings to a single file. On a phone or tablet this opens the share sheet, so you can send it to another device, save it to a cloud drive, or drop it in Files. On a Mac or Windows PC it opens a save dialog so you can put the file wherever you want.
- Restore from a backup lets you pick any backup file, from this device or
one you received from elsewhere, and apply it. TaskForge confirms first,
since this replaces your current settings. Restoring also writes the
settings back into your workspace's
taskforgefolder, so a restore stays in sync the same way normal settings changes do.
Each row shows when you last exported or restored, so you know whether your standalone backup is current.
A note for Obsidian Sync users
If you sync your workspace with Obsidian Sync, it has to be told to carry
non-note files. Turn on Settings, then Sync, then "Sync all other types"
inside Obsidian, and your taskforge settings files will sync across your
devices along with everything else. Without that toggle, Obsidian Sync skips
the folder and your settings stay stuck on one device. TaskForge shows this
reminder directly on the Backup & Restore screen when it detects an Obsidian
workspace.
Platform notes
Export and restore work the same everywhere; only the file dialog changes. macOS and Windows show a native save dialog for export and a file picker for restore. iOS and Android use the share sheet for export and your device's file picker for restore.
