The Daily Note widget now shows your actual note
Shipped in version 3.0.0
The home-screen widget for today's note used to show the date, the day of the week, and one raw line of markdown pulled from wherever the note happened to start. If your daily note opens on a heading, that line was the heading, hash marks included. This release replaces that with the note itself, rendered.
What you actually see now
Headings look like headings. Checkboxes look like checkboxes, checked or
not. Quotes get a side bar. Bold, italic, code spans, and strikethrough all
render as formatting instead of stray asterisks and backticks. A
[[wikilink]] shows its title, not its brackets, and a #tag stays a tag.
A task's due date used to show as a raw emoji in the source; it's now a
small badge, the same as everywhere else in the app.
Two things never fit a small tile no matter what: tables and math blocks. Rather than truncate a table into something that looks like data but isn't, the widget shows a small chip naming what it skipped, for example "TABLE 3×4".
Four sizes, not one
iPhone, iPad, and Mac widgets now come in small, medium, large, and extra large, the same size ladder every other TaskForge widget already has. Small used to be the only option. Large adds a footer with your note's checkbox tally ("1 of 3 done"). Extra large, available on iPad and Mac, splits into two columns at your note's top-level headings, so a heading and the list under it never get separated by the split.
Android's widget is resizable now too: drag it anywhere from 2×2 up to 5×5, instead of the fixed 2×2 it shipped with.
Add to today's note without opening the app
A + button sits in the widget's header. Tap it and TaskForge appends
straight into today's note, creating it first if you haven't started one
yet.
If today's note doesn't exist yet
Instead of a blank tile, you'll see a faint preview of your daily-note template, formatted the same way a real note would be. It shows what today's note will look like the moment you start it, rather than leaving the space empty until you do.
Android gets a settings screen
Android's daily-note widget can now be configured, the last widget in the bundle that couldn't be. Long-press it and open its settings for Font Size and Background, matching every other TaskForge widget.
Platform differences
Android's widget scrolls: drag through a longer note the same way you'd scroll a list. Apple's widgets don't scroll, so a long note fades out at the bottom edge instead, telling you there's more without cutting it off mid-line. That's a deliberate difference in how the two platforms handle widgets, not a gap on one side.
A couple of things to know
- If today's note doesn't exist yet and the widget happens to refresh in the background, it may briefly show a plain empty state instead of the template preview. Opening the app fixes it right away; this only affects the moment before a note exists.
- Cancelled tasks show their own symbol, not a checkmark, matching how cancelled tasks look everywhere else in the app.
- On Android 11 specifically, forcing a Background setting can leave two small elements, the ground behind a code block and a chip's hairline border, untinted. Android 12 and newer are unaffected.
