Daily notes work in every workspace now

Shipped in version 3.0.0

A daily note is a single file per day, usually the date as the filename, where you jot down whatever's on your mind: meeting notes, a running task list, a place to paste a link before you forget it. TaskForge has supported these for a while if you connected an Obsidian vault. Now they work the same way for every workspace, Obsidian or not, and you never have to think about whether today's file already exists before you start typing in it.

Today's note in search

Open search (the omnibar) and type "today." One row jumps straight there: Go to today's note if it already exists, Create today's note if it doesn't. Tap it, or arrow down to it and hit Enter, and either way you land in today's note a moment later. If it didn't exist yet, TaskForge just made it, no dialog, no "are you sure," nothing to undo. The row is always sitting there in the empty search view too, above your recent tasks and notes, so you don't even need to type anything.

In the calendar agenda now, too

Every day in the calendar's agenda list carries the same jump-or-create row: a small book icon and the note's title if one exists, or a quiet Create daily note label if it doesn't. Tap it either way, no need to open search first if you're already looking at that day. It sits right under the date, above whatever tasks and events are on the schedule, even on a day with nothing else on it.

A switch to turn the whole thing off

Settings → Notes → Daily notes now opens with an Enable Daily Notes switch, on by default. Flip it off and every daily-note affordance disappears at once: the search row, the new agenda row, the shortcut on the task-detail screen, and the daily-note options in filter conditions. Your existing daily note files aren't touched; flip the switch back on and everything reappears where it was.

Turning it on and setting the format

Daily notes need two things: notes turned on (Settings → Notes), and a filename pattern (Settings → Notes → Daily notes). A fresh workspace gets a sensible default out of the box, a Daily Notes folder with the date as the filename, so this mostly just works without you touching it. Prefer notes at the top level of your workspace, or a different folder entirely? Change the pattern any time; TaskForge parses it the same way it always has, including nested folders.

If you're already on the Obsidian preset, nothing about your existing format changes; this update doesn't touch a format you've already set.

Templates, without hand-writing one

Settings → Notes → Daily notes now has a Template row. Tap it and pick from three built-ins:

  • Simple, just a date heading, the same shape a daily note gets with no template at all.
  • Daily planner, with Schedule, Priorities, and Notes sections under the date.
  • Journal, with Today, Gratitude, and Notes sections under the date.

Picking one copies it into your workspace as a real file under Templates/, editable like anything else, and points the daily-note setting at that copy. Nothing is generated from a hidden built-in string at note-creation time; the file on disk is the template. Pick a different one later and TaskForge writes a fresh copy rather than overwriting the one you might have already customized. Choose None to go back to the plain date heading.

If you connect an Obsidian vault with the Daily Notes or Templater plugins already configured, TaskForge still reads that plugin config the way it always has, as long as you haven't picked one of the built-in templates above. An app-level template choice always wins over the Obsidian plugin chain when both are present.

What happens on a brand-new workspace

Choosing "Start fresh" during setup seeds today's note right away, using the clean date-heading default (setup doesn't ask about templates; pick one afterward if you want more structure). Every other day after that, TaskForge only creates a daily note the moment you actually open it, never in the background and never on a schedule you didn't ask for.

Platform notes

Identical on iPhone, iPad, Android, and Mac: same search row, same settings screen, same template picker. Search's desktop panel reaches the row with the same arrow-key and Enter navigation as any other result.
