Drag & drop in Kanban boards and grouped lists
Shipped in version 2.7.0
TaskForge lets you rearrange your tasks by dragging them, and it works the same way whether you're looking at a Kanban board (columns side by side) or a grouped list (sections stacked vertically). Both are two views of the same idea: your tasks split into groups by a property you choose (status, priority, project, tag, due date, and so on).
There are three things you can drag, plus a no-drag way to do the same moves.
1. Move a task to another group
Pick up a task by its drag handle and drag it onto a different column (Kanban) or section (grouped list). When you drop it, TaskForge updates the property that defines that group:
- Drop a task into the Done column → its status becomes Done.
- Drop a task into the High priority column → its priority becomes High.
- Drop a task into a project or tag group → it's added to that project/tag.
While you drag, the other groups shrink to compact header "rails" so they all stay
on screen. You don't have to scroll around hunting for the destination. The group
you're hovering opens up and shows a clear "Move to
Some groupings can't accept a moved task, for example, groups based on the file a task lives in. Those simply aren't draggable.
No-drag alternative: "Move to group…"
You don't have to drag. Open a task's menu (long-press or the ⋯ button) and choose Move to group… to pick the destination from a list. It does exactly the same thing as dragging: handy one-handed, on a small screen, or for accessibility.
2. Reorder tasks within a group (manual sort)
When a list is set to Manual sort, drag a task up or down within its group to place it exactly where you want. As you drag, a gap opens up at the spot the task will land, so you can see the destination even under your finger. Drop it onto the empty space at the bottom of a group to send it to the end.
If the list is sorted by a field (due date, priority, etc.), tasks stay in that order. The first time you drag a task to reorder it within a group, TaskForge switches that list to Manual order for you and shows a brief "Switched to manual order · Undo" message. Tap Undo to go back to the field sort. The list's sort label updates to Manual so it's clear what changed.
3. Reorder the groups themselves
Press and hold a column header (Kanban) or section header (grouped list) and drag it to a new position to change the order your groups appear in. A short "Columns reordered · Undo" message lets you take it back, and a Reset column order control appears once you've set a custom order, to restore the natural order (e.g. High → Low priority) any time.
Things that just work
- Your change shows instantly. The board updates the moment you drop: no waiting, no refresh. If a save ever fails, the task springs back and you'll see a brief message.
- It survives a restart. Reordered columns, moved tasks, and manual order are saved to your vault.
- Long drags don't get stuck. As you reach a group near the edge of the screen, the board scrolls automatically to bring more groups into view.
Platform notes
- Phone / tablet (touch): press and hold a task or header for a moment to pick it up (a subtle lift confirms it). A quick swipe still scrolls the list; only a deliberate press starts a drag.
- Mac / desktop: drag directly with the pointer; the board edges auto-scroll as you drag near them.
Settings
- Sort mode (per list): set a list to Manual to hand-order tasks within each group by dragging. Any field sort keeps tasks in that order; dragging to reorder switches it to Manual (with Undo).
- Kanban vs. list view (per list): the same drag actions work the same way in both; only the layout differs (columns side-by-side vs. sections top-to-bottom).
