Notes are always on (beta)

Shipped in version 3.0.0

TaskForge can show, create, and edit the markdown notes in your vault: the notes browser, the note view behind your tasks, daily notes, and note creation from the omnibar. Until now this was hidden behind an Enable Notes switch that was off by default, so many people never saw it.

That switch is gone. Notes are now a standard part of the app for everyone, free, on every platform.

What you'll see

With nothing to turn on, notes simply show up where they're useful:

  • The notes browser shows your vault's folders and notes.
  • "Open corresponding note" on a task takes you to the note the task lives in.
  • The omnibar finds notes by name, and can create a new note in the folder you choose.
  • Daily notes open (or create themselves) for today, with an optional template.
  • Search can include notes, and list sections can show notes alongside tasks and events.

If you never touch any of it, nothing changes about your tasks; TaskForge stays a task app first. Your notes are plain markdown files in your vault, exactly as Obsidian (or any other editor) sees them.

Why the "Beta" label

Notes now carry a small Beta badge on the Notes entry in Settings. The reading and browsing experience is solid; we're still refining the editing ergonomics and running a stability pass. The badge comes off when that work lands. Nothing about the beta label limits what you can do.

Smarter markdown editing

Both markdown editors (the note editor and the notes field on a task) got a round of editing improvements:

  • Lists continue themselves. Type - , 1. , or - [ ] and press Enter, and the next line picks up the same marker (numbered lists count up automatically). Press Enter on an empty list line and it drops the marker instead of adding another one, so you're not stuck backspacing to get out of a list.
  • A markdown toolbar sits above the keyboard on phone and tablet, with buttons for indent, outdent, checklist, bullets, bold, italic, a link ([](), cursor placed where you'd type next), and undo/redo.
  • On Mac, Tab and Shift-Tab indent and outdent a list line: there's no on-screen toolbar there, since a hardware keyboard already has the shortcut. Tab only does this on a list line; anywhere else it behaves normally.

Settings that remain

The Notes settings screen still has the options that matter:

  • New notes folder: where newly created notes are saved.
  • Daily notes: template, folder, and filename settings.

Only the on/off switch is gone, because there's nothing to switch anymore.
