Copy your files when you switch vaults

Shipped in version 3.0.0

Changing your vault folder used to just re-point TaskForge at the new location. Whatever was in the old folder stayed there, untouched, and on Android that old folder could be a sandboxed location the Files app can't even reach. Now the app warns you first and offers to bring everything along.

What happens when you pick a new folder

Go to Settings > Vault & Storage > Vault Location and pick a different folder. If this is a genuine change (you already had a vault, and it's not the same folder), TaskForge shows a dialog before doing anything:

  • Copy Files copies every file from your current vault, notes, tasks, and the settings folder, into the new folder before the switch happens.
  • Switch Without Copying just points the app at the new folder, the old behavior.
  • Cancel backs out entirely. Nothing changes and you stay on your current vault.

If you choose to copy, TaskForge tells you how many files it copied and how many it skipped once it's done, then switches over.

What "skipped" means

The copy never overwrites anything. If a file with the same relative path already exists in the destination folder, it's left alone and counted as skipped rather than replaced. The same happens for a file that can't be read, a permission error or a sync placeholder that hasn't finished downloading, for example.

If the copy can't write to the new folder at all, TaskForge stops, tells you, and cancels the switch. You stay on your old vault and nothing is copied halfway.

Your old files are always safe

TaskForge never deletes the old folder. Whether you copy or not, your files also remain in the folder you're switching away from. This is a copy operation, not a move.

Platform notes

The dialog and copy behavior are the same on iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows. On iOS and macOS, the copy runs while the app still has access to your current vault's folder, so it works even for a folder the Files app picker normally hides after you switch away from it.
