TaskNotes Gets Major Upgrades: Custom Templates, Filename Formats & More

TaskForge has rolled out a comprehensive set of enhancements to TaskNotes support, making it more capable and customizable than before. What's New in TaskNotes?

Over the past few weeks, TaskForge has introduced seven major enhancements to TaskNotes support. These features give you unprecedented control over how your tasks are organized, formatted, and managed within your Obsidian vault.

1. Customizable Filename Formats

One of the most requested features is finally here. You can now define custom filename patterns for your TaskNotes files using dynamic variables.

2. Body Templates for New Tasks

Stop starting from scratch every time you create a new TaskNote. With body templates, you can define default content structure that appears in every new task file.

3. Completion-Based Recurrence

Recurring tasks just got smarter. TaskNotes now supports completion-based recurrence, giving you control over when the next instance of a recurring task should be created.

4. Projects & Contexts Support

TaskNotes now fully supports projects and contexts, two powerful organizational dimensions that help you categorize and filter your tasks more effectively.

5. Enhanced Status System with 9 Statuses

TaskForge has expanded from 5 task statuses to 9, giving you more granular control over your task workflow. The new statuses include additional states for planning, blocking, and tracking progress.

6. Custom Priority Names for TaskNotes

Customize how priority levels are written in your TaskNotes YAML frontmatter. If you prefer 'critical' instead of 'highest' or 'urgent' instead of 'high', you can now define your own priority naming conventions.

7. YAML Error Detection & Reporting

TaskForge now automatically detects and reports broken YAML properties in your TaskNotes files. No more silent failures or mysterious missing tasks.

How Do I Get Started with the New Features?

All of these enhancements are available now in the latest version of TaskForge. Here's how to start using them:

Update TaskForge

Make sure you're running the latest version of TaskForge. These features are available in version 1.18 and later.

Enable TaskNotes Support

If you haven't already, go to Settings → Task Types → Task Files and enable TaskNotes support. Configure your identification method and default folder.

Configure Filename Formats & Templates

In Task File Settings, set up your preferred filename format and body template. You can always change these later as your workflow evolves.

Customize Status & Priority Names

Visit Settings → Task Display → Customize Task Statuses / Customize Task Priorities to customize how these appear in your TaskNotes files.

Start Creating TaskNotes

Create your first TaskNote with the new features. Try adding projects, contexts, and custom recurrence patterns to see how they work.

Are These Features Compatible with Existing TaskNotes?

One of the core design principles behind these enhancements is full backward compatibility. You do not need to change anything about your existing files to benefit from the update.

Existing Files Work Without Modification

TaskForge reads your current TaskNotes files exactly as before. No migration step is needed. Files created with earlier versions of TaskForge continue to work without any changes.

New Features Are Opt-In

Custom filename formats, body templates, and the new status options only apply when you enable them in settings. Until you turn them on, TaskForge behaves the same way it always has.

Custom Field Mapping Preserves Compatibility

If you use tools other than TaskForge to read your TaskNotes files, custom priority names and status labels are stored as plain text in YAML frontmatter. Any tool that parses YAML can read these values. Your data stays portable.

TaskNotes and Inline Tasks Coexist

You can use TaskNotes files and standard inline Markdown tasks in the same vault without conflicts. TaskForge treats them as separate formats and manages each one according to its own rules. This means you can adopt TaskNotes for detailed workflows while keeping quick to-do items as inline checkboxes in your daily notes.
