An offline todo app with nothing to sign up for
TaskForge keeps your tasks as markdown files in a folder on your device. There is no TaskForge server to reach, so a long flight or a cabin with no signal changes nothing: you add, tick and reschedule tasks exactly as you would online. If you want the list on a second device, you pick what syncs the folder.
- Works with no connection
- No account, no sign-up, no login
- Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android
What works with no connection
Almost everything. The app reads and writes files on the device, and the parts that run on a timer, like reminders, are scheduled on the device too. These are the only things that wait for a network.
-
Adding, editing and ticking tasks : Works offline
Each change is written straight into the markdown file.
-
Quick add with dates in plain words : Works offline
"pack the tent tomorrow 9am #trip !!" is parsed on the device, not by a server.
-
Lists, kanban board, calendar and search : Works offline
All of them are views over the same files.
-
Notes and daily notes : Works offline
Every note in the folder opens in the built-in editor.
-
Reminders (Premium) : Works offline
They are local notifications scheduled on the device, so they fire in airplane mode.
-
Widgets : Works offline
On iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android they read from the device. The task and calendar widgets are Premium; Windows has no widgets.
-
Calendar events : Works offline
TaskForge shows the calendars already on your phone, tablet or Mac, so you see what the device has stored. Windows shows tasks only.
-
Getting changes to your other devices : Needs a connection
Your sync tool sends them when it next has a network. TaskForge does no syncing of its own.
-
Buying or restoring Premium : Needs a connection
The store or web checkout has to confirm it. After that, Premium keeps working offline for a while, then needs one check online to carry on.
-
App updates : Needs a connection
The App Store and Google Play update the app; the Windows build and the direct Mac download update themselves.
Where your tasks are while you're offline
In a file you can open. A task is one checkbox line, like the one at the top of this page, inside an ordinary .md note. Tick it in TaskForge and the brackets get an x, with the completion date added to the end of the line. The edit is on disk the moment you make it, whether or not anything is online.
You choose the folder. Pick one you already have, or tap Start fresh. On Android a fresh workspace goes in Documents › TaskForge on the phone. On iPhone, iPad and Mac it goes in iCloud Drive when iCloud is on, or in Documents › TaskForge on the device when it isn't.
Prefer one file per task? Turn on task files and each task becomes its own note, with its fields in YAML frontmatter. The app also reads the Dataview and Task Genius field styles if that is what your notes already use.
Ticked in the app with no signal. The ✅ date was written on the device.
No account, no sign-up
TaskForge has no accounts. You never enter an email, set a password or log in, and there is no profile on a server. Open the app, choose a folder and start typing tasks.
Two honest footnotes. Installing from the App Store or Google Play uses the store account your phone already has, as any app does. And Premium is bought through that store, or through a web checkout on Windows and the direct Mac download, with no TaskForge account involved.
What the app does send, when it can
- Purchase checks for Premium, through the store and RevenueCat.
- A few anonymous setup choices, such as which task format you use, tied to an anonymous ID. Never task text, file names or paths.
- Update checks in the Windows build and the direct Mac download.
- Whatever you open yourself, like a map for an event's address or a video call link.
Sync is optional, and the choice is yours
With one device you need nothing at all. For two or more, sync the folder with a tool you already trust. TaskForge reads whatever arrives.
iCloud Drive
No setup on iPhone, iPad and Mac. To use the list offline, turn off Optimize Storage so the files stay downloaded.
Syncthing
Device to device, with no cloud copy in between. The closest thing to fully local sync.
Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive
Any of them works on the folder. On iPhone, open TaskForge before and after editing to avoid conflicts.
Obsidian Sync
Works for a vault, but it only runs while Obsidian is open, so edits made in TaskForge travel the next time you open Obsidian.
Use one sync service per folder. Two services moving the same files can corrupt them.
If you often edit on two devices while both are offline, use task files. Each task is its own file, so changes to two different tasks never collide in one file.
Offline on every platform
Windows
A signed installer from this site, no store and no sign-in. Windows 10 version 1809 or later, x64 and ARM64. It can close to the system tray and start at login. No widgets, and the calendar shows tasks but not calendar events yet.
Mac
From the Mac App Store or as a direct download, macOS 13 or later. A menu bar list shows open tasks from a space you pick.
iPhone and iPad
From the App Store, iOS 15.6 or later. Home Screen widgets need iOS 17, and Control Center controls for quick add need iOS 18.
Android
From Google Play, Android 11 or later. The Spaces widget (Premium) lets you tick a task without opening the app, and Quick Settings tiles open quick add.
When an online app fits better
No account means nothing to link your devices except the folder. For some lists that is the wrong trade.
You share lists or assign tasks
TaskForge has no shared lists, assignees or comments. Two people can share a synced folder, but nothing stops them editing the same line at once. A cloud app built for teams handles that properly.
You want your tasks in a browser
There is no web app. If you need to reach the list from a work computer where you can't install anything, a hosted service is the answer.
You want one sign-in that syncs everything
Setting up a sync tool is a step a hosted app skips. Todoist, for example, keeps working offline once you are logged in and syncs your changes when you reconnect (Todoist help center, as of October 2026). The tasks live on its servers, under your account.
You need Linux
There is no Linux build.
Questions about an offline todo app
Does TaskForge work completely offline?
Yes. Adding, editing and completing tasks, quick add, the kanban board, the calendar, search, notes, widgets and reminders all work with no connection, because the tasks are files on your device. A network is needed only to sync the folder to other devices, to buy or restore Premium, and to update the app.
Do I need to create an account or sign up?
No. TaskForge has no accounts and no login. You choose a folder and start. Installing from the App Store or Google Play uses your existing store account; the Windows installer from taskforge.md needs nothing.
Do reminders work without internet?
Yes. Reminders are local notifications that TaskForge schedules on the device, so they fire in airplane mode. Reminders and other notifications are part of Premium.
Is there an offline todo app for Windows?
TaskForge runs on Windows 10 version 1809 or later, x64 and ARM64, from a signed installer on taskforge.md. It works fully offline with no Microsoft account. Windows has no widgets, and its calendar shows tasks but not calendar events yet.
How do my tasks sync between devices without an account?
Through the folder. Sync it with iCloud Drive, Syncthing, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or Obsidian Sync, and every device running TaskForge reads the same files. Edits made offline travel when the sync tool next reaches the network. Use one service per folder.
Is the kanban board free?
Yes. The built-in Kanban space, with columns by status and drag between columns, is free and works offline. Making your own boards, turning another space into a board and dragging tasks into a manual order are Premium.
What is free and what needs Premium?
Free covers reading and editing tasks and notes in every format, recurring tasks, quick add, the built-in spaces, the calendar with your device's events, the Daily note widget, and the CLI and MCP server. Premium adds the task and calendar widgets, reminders and other notifications, your own spaces, creating and editing calendar events, bulk edits and default values for new tasks. You can subscribe or make a one-time purchase, priced per country, and store builds offer a free trial.
Download it once, then forget about the signal
Free to download. Open a folder you already have, or start fresh with a few sample tasks.
