Meeting notes that keep track of what's still open

TaskForge 3.1 gives the calendar events you pick a markdown note in your vault. The notes for a recurring meeting form a series, and the action items nobody finished last time show up in this week's note until someone checks them off.

Meeting notes usually fail in the week after the meeting. The action items sit at the bottom of a file nobody reopens, and the next meeting starts from a blank page.

So meeting notes in 3.1 are built around that week.

Tap the meeting, get the note

Events on the calendars you pick get a small note glyph on the agenda. Tap it and the note opens, started from a template. TaskForge writes the file the first time you change something in it. Open a note and back out, and nothing is written, so you don't end up with a folder of empty notes for meetings you only glanced at.

By default only events with other attendees get a note, so focus blocks and the dentist stay quiet. You can turn that off, and pick calendars one by one, in Settings, Notes, Meeting notes.

There are four built-in templates: Meeting, 1:1, Standup and Decision log. You can also point the setting at any file in your vault and use tokens like {{event.title}}, {{event.attendees}} and {{event.start:HH:mm}}. {{event.previous}} links to the note from the previous occurrence.

One pattern decides where notes go

Meeting notes use a path pattern, the same kind daily notes use. The default is flat, Meetings/2026-09-24 Scrum.md. The presets add a folder per series, a folder per month, or a folder per day. By day is the one I use:

By day preset
Meetings/2026/09/24/Scrum.md

If none of those fit, write your own. Tokens for the event's title, calendar and organizer sit next to the usual date tokens, and the settings screen previews the path your next real meeting would get. Daily notes got presets in the same release: flat, by year, by month, by month with the month's name, and by week.

What's in the file

Here is a Scrum note made with the Standup template, a few minutes into the meeting:

Meetings/2026/09/24/Scrum.md
--- event: 1F3A9C2E-7B1D-4C8A-9E2F-5A6B7C8D9E0F::1790254800000 event_series: 1F3A9C2E-7B1D-4C8A-9E2F-5A6B7C8D9E0F event_date: 2026-09-24 attendees: - Marta Silva - Louis Tremblay --- ## Yesterday Export fix merged. ## Today - [ ] Louis: first draft of the migration script 📅 2026-09-26 ## Blocked Marta is waiting on staging access.

The four frontmatter keys are the whole link between the note and the calendar. event names this occurrence. event_series is shared by every occurrence of a recurring meeting. event_date is the day, and TaskForge writes attendees once, when it creates the note. Everything below the frontmatter is yours.

Why the note lives in your vault

A meeting note is a plain markdown file in the folder you already sync. Obsidian opens it like any other note, and a month later you can search for what you decided on Sep 10 in either app. TaskForge finds a note by its event keys, not by its path, so you can rename it or move it to another folder in Obsidian and the agenda still links to it.

Agents can read it too. The agents.md and dialect.json files TaskForge keeps in your vault now describe meeting notes. The taskforge CLI and the MCP server can both list a meeting's notes, along with the action items still open from its earlier occurrences. Ask Claude what's outstanding before Thursday's sync and it reads the same files you do.

Last week's action items come to this week's meeting

Open this week's note for a recurring meeting and a Still open from earlier section sits above the body. It lists every unchecked action item from the series' earlier notes, grouped by the meeting they came from. Nothing gets copied. The section is a live query over your tasks, so checking an item off here edits the line in last week's file, and it drops out of every later note.

The same number shows up wherever the meeting does: on the agenda tile, in the event peek, in Edit Event, in the banner that appears while the meeting runs, and on the meeting's own reminder as a line like "2 items still open from Sep 17". The banner also shows when the meeting ends and has an Open note button. I wanted one count, worked out in one place, so no two screens could disagree about it.

Action items use your task format

An action item is an ordinary task. In a vault of inline tasks it is a - [ ] line in the note, written in the format the vault already uses: Obsidian Tasks emoji, Dataview fields or Task Genius. In a TaskNotes vault each action item is its own task file in your task-file folder, and the meeting note gets one line linking to it, - [[the task file]], which the note shows as the task's row. Either way it turns up in your lists and on the calendar like any other task.

The Add action item row at the bottom of the note opens the usual task composer with this note already set as the file. Typing - [ ] straight into the note works too.

Meeting notes are Premium

Meeting notes are part of Premium , next to creating and editing calendar events. Seeing your calendar and its events stays free. If Premium lapses, your meeting notes stay in your vault as ordinary markdown you can open and edit. TaskForge stops adding the series strip and the carry-over section, and nothing gets deleted or rewritten.

Try it on your next meeting

Meeting notes ship in TaskForge 3.1. Open the agenda, tap the note glyph on your next meeting, and the note is there.
